Speaker
Dr. Monica Johnson
Dr. Monica Johnson, PsyD, is a licensed clinical psychologist, AASECT Certified Sex Therapist, and the founder of Kind Mind Psychology, a virtual group practice providing evidence-based, culturally affirming care across New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Delaware, and more than 40 PSYPACT states.
With over 15 years in practice, Dr. Johnson has worked across outpatient, inpatient, and forensic settings, including serving as lead psychologist at a homeless clinic. That range shaped a clinical philosophy built on meeting people wherever they are: she draws from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and other evidence-based modalities rather than relying on a single approach. Her clinical work spans anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, trauma and complex PTSD, personality disorders, emotional dysregulation, relationship challenges, and sexual wellness, with particular dedication to BIPOC, LGBTQ+, neurodivergent, and alternative-relationship communities navigating minority stress.
Dr. Johnson is the host of ADHD & through Understood.org, where she explores how ADHD intersects with relationships, identity, parenting, and daily life, and the former host of the Savvy Psychologist podcast (Macmillan / Quick and Dirty Tips). She co-authored Addressing Race-Based Stress in Therapy with Black Clients: Using Multicultural and Dialectical Behavior Therapy Techniques (Routledge), a practical framework for culturally responsive treatment, and wrote and recorded Push Back: Assert Yourself in Relationships, an Audible Original on boundaries and communication.
Beyond the therapy room, Dr. Johnson speaks at conferences and organizations on race-based stress, evidence-based practice, DBT skills, sexual wellness, and culturally affirming care, and she provides clinical supervision and training for the next generation of mental health professionals. Her work and commentary have been featured in The New York Times, NPR, British Vogue, SELF, the Associated Press, Ebony, Psychology Today, and PopSugar among others.
She earned her PsyD from the Arizona School of Professional Psychology, her BA from the University of South Carolina, and completed postdoctoral training at Cherokee Health Systems in Knoxville, Tennessee.
